ABOUT MBRARA
 

Mbarara District is located in South Western part of Uganda and borders districts of Bushenyi, Ntungamo, Kiruhura, Isingiro and Ibanda. The district has a wide range of beautiful, large scenic spots, friendly people from various cultures, diverse wildlife in addition to good tropical climate of wet and dry seasons.

Mbarara district unfolds a stunning panoramic view of Ankole hills that connect the Great western Rift Valley.

Mbarara Municipality which is the districts main town is a secure and safe destination with good infrastructure and hospitable people. It boasts of a fast growing commercial center with a growing population, leisure, religious and education centers.

The population of Mbarara district stands at 1,093,388 as per the 2002 census preliminary results. Male population is 537,672 while the female population is 555,716. The population density is 107, with a growth rate of 2.9 percent per annum. Household size is 4.9 percent and urban population is 8.0 percent.

History of Mbarara

Mbarara district was formerly part of the region known as Ankore between 1972 and 1973. It was divided into east Ankore and West Ankore. Under the Idi Amin regime the two Ankores were renamed Mbarara and Bushenyi districts.

What to do when in Mbarara

You can take a trip to Lake Mburo National Park that is located on the Mbarara-Masaka Road and a get a chance to see the rare Shoebill, Zebras and other fascinating wildlife.

You can also visit Queen Elizabeth National Park which is one and a half hours drive from Mbarara.

You can go shopping in the fast growing commercial center of the municipality.

You can visit Kitagata hot springs in Bushenyi district which is just 45 minutes drive or 1 hour drive by Bus.
